Food products with authenticity seals take centre stage at the Italian Theatre at Taste of Dubai
Aiming to educate the public about the genuine ‘Made in Italy’ products, the Italian Trade Agency organises informative seminars, workshops, food demonstrations and samplings at the Italian Theatre at Taste of Dubai. The event will take place this weekend starting March 8-10, 2018 at Dubai Amphitheatre in Dubai Media City.
Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) are trademarks introduced in 1992 by the European Union to avoid deceptive and misleading marketing schemes in traditional food products promoted abroad. These validity seals define and label a product for quality, authenticity and reliability. PDO guarantees that the food was made by local farmers using traditional methods, while PGI proves that the quality or reputation of the Italian food or condiment is linked to the place or region where it is produced, processed, or prepared.
Gianpaolo Bruno, Italian Trade Commissioner to the UAE, Oman and Pakistan, said: “It is imperative that we educate not only the entrepreneurs but the consumers as well on how to distinguish genuine from the fake. Taste of Dubai is a platform that we could use to drive this mission with the thousands of visitors who attend annually.”
Luigi Polizzi, Head, PQAI IV Certified Quality and Protection of Agricultural, Food and Viticultural GI products, Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAAF), commented: “The core objective of our department is to protect the quality of Italian produce. It is unfortunate that some food producers claim to be genuine and use misleading promotional content that affect the businesses of the authentic ones. The Italian cuisine has a strong tradition, it has gone a long way. We cannot compromise what we have achieved over the years; that’s why we aim to combat the misuse of labels, and educate people.”
PDO-sealed Zafferano dell’Aquila, Basilico Genovese, Taleggio; and PGI-sealed Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva Toscano from Tuscany, Limone di Sorrento from Campania, Cappero di Pantelleria from Sicily, and Radicchio Rosso di Treviso from Veneto, are among the EU-verified products that will be showcased at the Italian Theatre and used in master classes and demonstrations by top Michelin-starred chefs including:
- Chef Silvia Baracchi Il Falconiere Relais & Spa, Cortona*
- Chef Marco Bottega, Aminta Resort, Genazzano*
- Chef Maria Grazia Soncini, La Capanna di Eraclio, Codigoro*
- Chefs Claudio Pasquarelli and Lara Pasquarelli, Hotel Ristorante Casa Vacanze Claudio, Bergeggi*
